USA TODAY Network Launches TODAY Californian
New Digital Newsletter Delivers Essential State News to Californians and Readers Nationwide
USA TODAY Network, a part of USA TODAY Co., Inc. (NYSE: TDAY), comprised of USA TODAY and over 200 local publications across the country, has launched TODAY Californian, a dedicated daily newsletter offering in-depth coverage of California news, politics, sports, culture and economic developments. This content is complemented by an expanded California section on USA TODAY’s digital platform.
“California is home to nearly 40 million Americans and plays a crucial role in driving timely national conversations spanning everything from technology and entertainment to climate policy and economic innovation,” said Greg Burton, Regional Editor West, USA TODAY Network. “TODAY Californian provides a fresh take on California news, sports and culture — told by journalists who live it, not just cover it, helping readers everywhere understand how the Golden State influences American life.”
TODAY Californian leverages USA TODAY Network’s established and long-standing presence as an authority in California, drawing from eight daily local publications across the state to deliver comprehensive coverage that links local developments to their national impact.
TODAY Californian features include:
- Daily news updates on politics, economy and major state developments
- Comprehensive sports coverage connecting teams to community identity
- Weekly deep dives into policy impacts, innovation trends and cultural movements
- Exclusive analysis from USA TODAY Network’s California-based journalists
- Coverage spanning from coastal communities to desert regions
“Our expansion into a dedicated state-focused newsletter in California reflects our commitment to serving local communities while maintaining a national lens,” said Michael Anastasi, Senior Vice President of Local News, USA TODAY Network. “TODAY Californian provides journalism rigor that fosters trust among readers and reliable access to timely information to inform readers’ decision-making.”
Sports also plays an integral role in shaping TODAY Californian’s coverage, creating a sense of unity and fostering community and belonging. The state’s sports fandoms and rivalries highlight regional identities, and its sports culture extends beyond game coverage to become part of a national conversation. From covering the continued rise of women’s sports to telling the larger stories around the games and the athletes, TODAY Californian meets Californians where they are.
With this launch, USA TODAY Network is making significant investments to expand its journalistic footprint across California, including the recent additions of dedicated reporters and correspondents. The TODAY Californian team is currently comprised of California Newsletter Editor Monica Garske, Los Angeles reporter Paris Barraza, Northern California reporter Noe Padilla, Los Angeles-based Sports Trending Editor Gabe Zaldivar, Northern California sports reporter Marcus D. Smith and Southern California sports reporter Andrés Soto, with ongoing recruitment efforts underway.
